Miller big 40 g and auxiliary power but no weld
the welder uses three brushes. center is common. one is the weld and the other is aux power. clip a meter to each set of brushes drape leads away from anything that moves and start it up. measure the DC voltage on each set. make sure brush is making contact with the slip ring. a stuck brush or very dirty slip ring can cause your problem. start with the excitation circuit.

miller big 40 Back from short trip. Checked continuity from slip rings back to rectifier. All checked out at less than 1 ohm. Additional history is unit was working, was towed a few miles and engine would not start. Fuse at hold in to start was blown. Fuse was replaced but welder has no output. Miller big 40 vs Lincoln SA-200
The newer big 40's with the CC/CV option are the cats ***. The old CC only machines suck, but they have one redeming quality, you can take the F163 out of it and couple it up to a SA200. lol I do quite a bit of AC aluminum work so the big 40 works great for me. but if all you are doing is DC stick the SA200 will blow the miller away.
