Each month, Chemical Engineering publishes the latest values for the Chemical Engineering Plant Cost Index (CEPCI) — a widely used resource for plant construction costs. The CEPCI is calculated using various data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Once a year, we calculate and publish an annual average value, which for 2017 was 567.5.

The final value for April 2024 was itself upwardly revised. The small uptick in the May CEPCI was a result of increases in the Equipment and Construction Labor subindices. The Buildings and Engineering & Supervision subindices saw very small declines. The current CEPCI value now sits at 1.1% lower than the corresponding value from May 2023.

The final value edged higher for the year despite a generally downward trend in the monthly CEPCI values throughout 2019. Nine of the 11 month-to-month changes in CEPCI values in 2019 were lower than the previous month's value, but since the CEPCI began the year at a higher level, the average for the year ended up higher than the previous year.
